.::Artist in Residency ::.
Mariëtte van Duin (NL)
4th May - 19th June 2015

Mariëtte van Duin (NL) works on a project basis as an artist, scenographer and director. She designs and creates the stage settings and costumes for theatre and public spaces, as well as being a painter.

The residency was made possible by dutch crowdfunding platform in the creative sector Voordekunst. The artist presented her project in a short video posted on the platform, where people would be asked if they would like to donate and support her project. Crowdfunding and the donators became an important part of the project, for the artist had to make small and bigger artworks in exchange for their support.

Confrontation between happiness and melancholy is characteristic of the artist's work - costumed people, colored lamps, music, confetti, carousels and playgrounds in an atmosphere of rust, dirt, flats and poverty. The figures in her work are often detached from their environment and thereby detached from themselves. A common theme in her work is the 'gaze of the other' and our own critical eye, from which we can never escape. The audience in her work is often, in turn, also being watched.

With the project the artist wanted to find out what is it that she finds so moving about Slovenia - in almost all of her work you can find elements and atmosphere of ex-yugoslavian countries. She collected old photos, clothes and objects from people at the flea markets in Slovenia and photographed everything which felt inspiring. This collected material was the base for the work, which resulted in a series of journal-sketches, paintings, maps and photos.

In 2015 we will be experimenting with ecological gardening principles - lasagna gardening and raised garden beds. At the beginning of the season we prepared new plans and we will be upgrading our garden based upon our experiences. The plans include a new garden with wooden construction for the protective net net against hail. Other novelties: no-dig straw garden bed for cultivating organic potatoes and 8 new raised permaculture garden beds.

You can read more on our web page under ecology & mini blog!

Also we would like to invite you to help us collect plastic bottles, cans, glass bottles and car-tyres for our next eco-art project.

at permaculture workshops (lasagna gardening, planting, DIY compost, recycling workshops, picking herbs, vegitarian cooking, DIY ecological cleaning recipes,...), give a hand and learn something new or read about our work in our mini blog.
