Yes, yes… time has come to deal with green tomatoes. Those of you who have a garden know what we’re talking about – cold nights have done their job. We were looking for some nice recipes (www is ful of them) and decided to try out a few. Here’s the first in the series – fried green tomatoes (and yes, you’ve probably seen the movie).
Salt and other spices
Cut green tomatoes in thin slices (like cookies – they are done faster and are much softer this way). Salt them and prepare flour, egg and breadcrumbs on separate plates. We’ve used curry and cayenne pepper which we mixed with the egg, but you can use any other combination of spices – experiment with the flavors!
Dip tomato slices first in flour, then in egg and finish with breadcrumbs. Repeat.
Heat oil or ghee in a pan and fry. When fried, drain the excess fat on a paper towel and serve.
We rarely eat fried food, but we’ll be doing green tomatoes again – they taste good! … and we have a lot of them 🙂
PS: and sure you can do a vegan version too…
